After coming back from Daytona, I had a few days before I took off back to South Florida. I didn’t think I would be able to get away with not working out this week so I decided to check out a local CrossFit Gym in Tampa. I came across CrossFit Jaguar when I was out to eat with my fiancé. Similar to my last few CrossFit Gyms, it was located in a shopping complex.
I stopped by the gym in the morning and spoke with the lead trainer and owner of the gym, Paula. At first glance, I wasn’t sure what type of CrossFit gym it would be considering the other gyms had male trainers. But I guess I should never judge a book by its cover because she was awesome.
Paula is NSCA CPT, CSCS, and CrossFit Level 1 certified. With all these certifications, I can only assume that CrossFit isn’t her first rodeo with the fitness industry. When I arrived for the 4:30 class, I did the usual and signed the waiver and put my stuff down. Paula introduced me to the other 5 athletes who were getting warmed up for the WOD.
My initial impression of the gym was that it was small and resembled a “group fitness” gym, not CrossFit. I later found out that it use to be a personal training facility and had converted to a CrossFit Gym. Once I took a step inside and noticed the rope hanging from the rafters that took the place of a ceiling tile, I knew I there for CrossFit. The ceiling tiles were also removed for a couple sets of gymnastic rings. The pull-up set up was interesting, and it worked like a charm. The gym consisted of a number of dynamic medicine balls, Rogue Fitness rubber bumpers, Olympic bars, rowing machines, a few squat racks, and some plyometric boxes.
So 4:30 came and the group snapped to attention and was focused on the WOD. Paula explained every part of the WOD and demonstrated a few of the more complex exercises. I thought her in depth attention to detail and knowledge was very impressive.
Around 4:40, our stretching and warm up were over. During those first 15 minutes, we used the foam roll to get any kinks out of our IT bands and stretch out our hip flexors. If you have never foam rolled, make sure you do it before you squat or do any other leg work. The pain might be unbearable as you slooowwwlllyyyyy roll out ever tight and sore muscle. After the stretching, we grabbed some jump ropes and did a dynamic warm-up to get our blood pumping. I recommend bringing your own jump rope though; Rogue Fitness and Again Faster have some great speed ropes that do not take up much space in your gym bag.
The WOD started around 4:50.
Warm up
Super Set
2 x 5, 1 x 3 Squat
3 x 5 Dead Hang Pullups
Lift
Super Set
Squat 8 – 8 – 8
Weighted Pull Ups 3 – 3 – 3
AMRAP 15 minutes (partnered)
10 wall ball
10 pull ups
10 alternating medicine ball pushups
By 5:30, I was exhausted and felt my legs start to cramp. It might have been a good idea to bring some water. Throughout the workout, I was partnered up with Big John. For being a older gentleman, he threw up a lot of weight on his 3×8 on squat.
When we were warming up on the squat racks, Paula mentioned that a girl squatted 315 for 8 in her first class of the day. My entire mentality changed and realized that no matter what I did afterwards, I had to squat more than 315. So I settled at 320 for my last set. It’s all about personal pride and competition. My final set of 3 on weighted pull-ups was 70. One thing that I liked about Jaguar CrossFit is the condition of all the weights and equipment. It all was in great working order.
The AMRAP snuck up on me like a ninja and almost took me out. I started the series with John, 10 wall balls, 10 push-ups, and 10 alternating medicine ball pushups. In the mean time, the 2 other groups of women were kicking butt. Towards the end, it ended up being a small competition. Throughout the entire WOD, all of the athletes were very supportive and encouraging. Paula was on top of us and pushing us past our limits. If anyone is ever in the Tampa area, I recommend that you stop by for a WOD, or at least to admire the way they utilize their space.
Thank you Paula, and CrossFit Jaguar.
