Got to acclimate
Got to acclimate

We live in Florida, it’s hot; these are the facts.  It is not healthy to spend 24/7 in artificial air 30 degrees below the temperature of your environment.

Heat acclimatization refers to biological adaptations that reduce physiologic strain (e.g., heart rate and body temperature), improve physical work capabilities, improve comfort and protects vital organs (brain, liver, kidneys, muscles) from heat injury.  The most important biological adaptation from heat acclimatization is an earlier and greater sweating response, and for this response to improve it needs to be invoked.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t acclimate intelligently.  Start your physical fitness initially in the cooler morning or evening hours, gradually working up to the heat of the day.  Start slowly when increasing intensity and duration as your heat tolerance permits.  Consume sufficient water to replace sweat losses.  Dehyrdation will negate most benefits of physical fitness and heat acclimatization.

Stay fit and enjoy the beautiful warm Florida summer!
