To keep your hands looking like these (not ripped and bleeding) follow these tips for maintenance:

I’m sure your mother always told you the importance of washing your hands, especially before you eat.  One exception I am certain she would agree with would be NEVER wash your hands before doing pull ups.  The water softens the skin making it more likely to tear.

We use our hands a lot in CrossFit.  The constant rubbing of the bar on the hands causes a callus buildup which will tear if not properly maintained.  Purchase a pedicure accessory at your local drugstore and gently sand or buff your hands a couple of times a week.  Do not get overzealous as you do not want to rid yourself of all the build up.  Just a few minutes here and there will address the problem nicely.

What?  Did someone say gloves?  NO!!  Blasphemy, I must be hearing things.
