Summertime treats
Summertime treats

Every once in a while we need to indulge in our favorite treats.  Some people call this a “cheat meal”.  I like to refrain from that term and refer to an occaisional indulgence as a “treat”.  With summertime approaching and the warm Florida weather upon us many of us will be spending afternoons and weekends barbecuing our meals.  A favorite OCCAISIONAL cool summertime dessert of mine is a SMALL serving of homemade ice cream.  No need to derail from eating healthy totally by buying synthetic or processed frozen treats.  Engage the whole family or your friends in the fun of making it yourself.

In the old days when ice cream was made of whole eggs, milk and sugar and laboriously cranked out in the home freezer, a serving of ice cream was only an occaisional treat which didn’t do much harm.  Today in this mass producing, synthetic age, it is another matter entirely.  Today you may be treating your family to poision!  Ice cream manufacturers are not required by law to list the additives used in the manufacturing of their product.  Consequently, today most ice creams are synthetic from start to finish.  Analysis has shown the following:

DIETHYLGLYCOL:  A cheap chemical used as an emulsifier instead of eggs is the same chemical used in antifreeze and in paint removers.
PIPERONAL:  Used in place of vanilla.  This chemical is used to kill lice.
ALDEHYDE C-17:  Used to flavor cherry ice cream.  It is an inflammable liquid also used in aniline dyes, plastic and rubber.
ETHYL ACETATE:  Used to give ice cream a pineapple flavor–and as a cleaner for leather and textiles; its vapors have been known to cause chronic lung, liver and hear damage.
BUTYRALDEHYDE:  Used in nut flavored ice creams.  It is one of the ingredients of rubber cement.
AMYL ACETATE:  Used for its banana flavor.  It is also used as an oil paint solvent.
BENZYKL ACETATE:  Used for its strawvberry flavor.  It is a nitrate solvent.

Doesn’t sound too appetizing to me.  But don’t despair, it’s really easy and fun to make your own healthier version.  To burn off some of the calories use a traditional hand crank model.  A simple recipe for basic vanilla is as follows:

3 cups raw cream
1/2 cup organic maple syrup
3 organic egg yoks
1 tablespoon arrowroot
1 tablespoon vanilla

Beat egg yolks, blend the rest of the ingredients.  Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to instructions.
